Everybody has seen the Facebook Connect feature on Jelsoft’s vBulletin software, but what about an Open Source version? I asked myself the same and to much disappointment never found anything, but not anymore!
FINALLY somebody has made a Facebook Connect MOD for phpBB3!
Currently undergoing heavy (and fast) construction, the MOD is flying through ALPHA stage and will soon be released for BETA!
Click here to view the MOD thread on the phpBB community forums!
I will keep you updated here when the MOD is available in BETA, and when it’s out of BETA, etc.. So subscribe to the Webmaster Blog RSS Feed for updates!

I would love to know more about this mod. What are the features and what does it post from facebook. Thanks.
Here’s a feature list:
* Create new user upon first login (and transfer data like location, website, birthday, interests, avatar, signature, facebook’s proxy mail address..)
* Link an existing user to the Facebook account upon first login (with data transfer for all fields which the user hasn’t filled out yet)
* Automatically add (mutual) friends upon first login, if any of your facebook friends have also an user account on your forum.
* Automatically detect the user’s Facebook language, and use it if it is installed on your forum!
* Allow forum notifications via Facebook PM (since an e-mail address can not be fetched via Facebook for privacy reasons)
* ** TO DO ** Publish stories (short or one-liners) upon first login / new thread / new reply if user wants it
The best part is that it posts notifications to the users facebook notifications area, to keep them coming back to your board
I’ve heard that there has been some difficulty with the phpbb3-facebook connect mod after facebook updated its interface recently. Does anyone know if this mod has been affected/is still affected? And if so, has there been anything else that’s been developed?
Hey, well the developer for this mod actually stopped developing it
Whether or not someone else picks it up or not is up to whoever, but it’s not looking great!
I’ve partly made one for phpBB but it’s nowhere near mod-release standards and I doubt it ever will be.. Things like that, I do pretty makeshift rather than neat tidy coding for everyone else.. Especially since I’ve never used the Facebook APIs at all before then..
