Couldn’t agree more – I tend to stay away from modifying the core files now. I could never keep on top of upgrades other wise..

Indeed the upgrade system is unbeatable! As plugins use a plugin system of include()s etc, core files are usually untouched by most people, so upgrades are automated.. However, once you get into modifying the core files, you regret it pretty quickly for all the editing you have to do to upgrade.. But such is life..
